Timings

Once again it is hard to detail how long a web project takes because each one is different. They can last days, weeks or months. Generally speaking a typical website takes around 6-8 weeks from starting negotiations to a finished website. That does not mean the website development takes 6-8 weeks of solid work, in fact a lot of that time is spent waiting for client feedback or to receive instructions from the client.

There are a few things that can really slow down the process from the client’s perspective:

  • Failure to agree on a design
  • Delays in the client supplying copy and/or photography for the website
  • Amount of contact required by the client regarding progress

Regarding that last point, I do my very best to make sure clients are kept informed of progress. I do this via the software, Basecamp. However, some clients require a lot more attention than others, and that’s okay but as a one man operation it’s important to realise that the more time spent writing progress reports and updating spreadsheets means less time is spent on the tangible parts of the project.

Lead time

Generally speaking, it is usually around 4-6 weeks before you first get in touch before any work can be scheduled in this is due to existing work commitments from other clients.
